My daughter needs to play because it brings joy to her life. That joy is vital to her emotional well being, and I strongly believe that emotional health is the foundation she needs to succeed in life.
When she plays, she radiates freedom.
She can tackle the world and exudes confidence.
The possibilities are limitless, and her creativity shines.
There is no other activity she participates in that causes her to break out in a song and dance.
Look for my Top Tips to Encourage Unstructured Play in 2012!! I will be sharing easy ways parents can support the practice of play at home.

Thank you, Dena. Yes, these shots are some of my favorite of her.
She looks like a dancer! Are you sure she hated ballet? haha! I agree- play is so essential for many reasons.
C&C - She is definitely a dancer but she doesn't like anyone telling her how to dance! LOL!

Thank you for your sweet compliments, Maryanne! Normally, it's very hard to capture her when she is so happy because she often turns her grins to scowls when I bring out the camera. ;)

Great post! Unstructured play is the best!
Totally agree with you, Rebekah - unstructured play means giving freedom to the child. And then, the child knows best - how to play.
Love the photos and yes, agree with C&C - she does look like she has the poise and penchant for dancing!
